Many directors have made cameo or even blink-and-miss appearances in their own films, while some have been acted as the lead characters and helmed their movies. However, Pariyerum Perumal filmmaker Mari Selvaraj is not one to entertain the idea of being in front of the camera. Speaking to SS Music at a recent event, the Bison director said that he would not like to act in his own films. "When you become an actor, you would have to create a group of people who follows you without asking what or why. That is a very unnecessary task," he said.

The filmmaker added that becoming an actor would invite plenty of attention and make one an extremely desirable figure. He highlighted the God-like treatment that movie stars generally receive from their fans and followers. "I do not believe in God. I do not want to be a God either," said the filmmaker, eliciting massive claps from the audience.

According to its producer Applause Entertainment, Mari Selvaraj's Bison has grossed more than 55 crore from theatres worldwide. The film, based on Arjuna Award winner Manathi Ganesan, tells the story of a young man (Dhruv Vikram) aspiring to get into the Indian National Kabaddi team one day. However, his journey to the top is full of hurdles in the form of caste and class divide as well as politics.
