Bison Kaalamaadan is inspired by the story of a real life kabaddi player, and is written and directed by Mari Selvaraj. The director has revealed that lead actor, Dhruv Vikram's character from the film is named Kittaan.

In a video series, titled 'Introduction to the world of Bison Kaalamaadan', the director said, "When I wanted to make the film, the first question in my mind was who will lead the film? Because, it is not an easy task to work on this film. For Bison a hero who would toil physically and mentally for the film was needed. We couldn't do this film if the lead actor couldn't match my energy or my speed of working. At that moment Dhruv was the obvious choice."

Speaking about Kittaan, Dhruv's character in the film, Mari said, "Dhruv's efforts in bringing to life, the Kittan I had in my mind, and the Kittan I visualised from my childhood, is commendable."

The cast of Bison Kaalamaadan also includes Anupama Parameshwaran, Lal, Rajisha Vijayan, and Ameer, among others.
