After five days of riding high during the festive weekend of Navratri and Ayudha Pooja, Dhanush's latest directorial Idli Kadai has witnessed a major dip in box office collections. While its first Monday recorded a little over Rs 1 crore across India, Tuesday too followed suit with similar numbers.
According to Sacnilk, the drama which also stars Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Sathyaraj, Shalini Pandey and Rajkiran in lead roles, earned Rs 1.50 crore on day 7, taking its total to Rs 41.65 crore.
After much anticipation, Idli Kadai opened with Rs 11 crore across India on its first day on October 1. With mostly positive reviews from family audiences, the film collected nearly Rs 40 crore in the first five days, with Rs 18 crore from Friday to Sunday alone. However, with Kannada's big budget Kantara prequel Kantara: Chapter 1's release on October 2, the film started facing decrease in box office numbers. Directed by Rishab Shetty, the period drama film has already made waves across the globe, earning over Rs 400 crore worldwide.
Idli Kadai revolves around Dhanush as Murugan who is in pursuit of finding his roots and setting up his father's idli shop in their ancestral village after quitting his job at a michelin-star restaurant.
While the film has been receiving positive reviews on the screenplay front, it has been receiving mixed reviews on its predictable storyline. Our CE review of the film by Avinash Ramachandran read, "The film, which talks about Murugan’s aspirations, Sivanesan’s dreams, Vishnuvardhan’s hatred, Meera’s confusion, Ashwin’s vendetta, and Kayal’s love, allows all of these portions to stew for a bit too long. The magic of cooking lies in knowing the right mix of ingredients, and Idli Kadai falters on that front."
The technical crew comprises Dhanush's frequent collaborator, composer GV Prakash, cinematographer Kiran Koushik, editor GK Prasanna, and art director Jackson. The film is produced by Akash Bhaskaran through his Dawn Pictures banner and Dhanush through his Wunderbar Pictures banner. The film marks Inban Udhayanidhi's (son of Tamil Nadu's Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin) first film credit as a distributor.
