Filmmaker C Premkumar's views about the social relevance of films and the responsibility of filmmakers to treat their projects with this aspect in mind are going viral. In a recent masterclass session on cinema with anchor Maathevan, Premkumar said that people who advocate only for the entertainment values of films while ignoring their social impact have a "narrow perspective". The '96 and Meiyazhagan filmmaker went on to say that he has learnt many things from films that he could not even from his teachers and parents. With a rhetoric, Premkumar revealed that directors who make films that deal with social issues also know how to do commercial films. However, he added that those directors get something in the films they make that they fail to gain from commercial films. "That is a responsibility, a social responsibility," said the filmmaker.

He also shared that such films should foster the views, social outlook, and tastes of their target audience. "All art forms have this responsibility, but not all of them are popular. Cinema is the most popular art form. Therefore, you will subconsciously learn some good things when you watch many films, even classics," he said.

C Premkumar's upcoming films include an action thriller with Fahadh Faasil and the '96 sequel.
