Stephen's confession of committing nine murders of women, across the span of six months, is meant to make these cases open-and-shut. Yet, a cop and a psychiatrist can't help but dig deeper as they sense that things don't add up. The trailer for Stephen, the upcoming psychological thriller from Netflix, was unveiled by the streamer on Wednesday. The film stars Gomathi Shankar, Michael Thangadurai and Smruthi Venkat in lead roles.
Gomathi Shankar, in his lead debut, plays the titular Stephen, who confesses to committing the crime and even declines the help of a lawyer to fight his case. From the outset, he seems to be troubled, and his upbringing and baggage seem to have pushed him to go on a murdering spree. While the public and the family of the victims are enraged with Stephen, demanding justice, police officer Michael and a psychiatrist (Smruthi Venkat) decide to investigate further before coming to a conclusion. The trailer for Stephen promises a twisted psychological edge-of-the-seat crime thriller.
Gomathi Shankar has played small roles in Gargi, Lover and Dharala Prabhu. As per the streamer, the official description of the film reads, "A psychiatrist evaluating a self-confessed serial killer unravels a twisted web of trauma, deceit, and psychological manipulation—only to question if the killer is truly guilty or just another victim in a larger, darker game."
The upcoming film marks the directorial debut of Mithun Balaji. Stephen is produced by Jayakumar and Mohan under the JM Production House. Gomathi Shankar has also written the film with Mithun Balaji. The film is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 5.
