At the trailer launch event for Mask, his upcoming film with Kavin, filmmaker Vetri Maaran shared his thoughts about how the film came about. Vetri Maaran, who serves as a mentor and former producer in the Kavin starrer, said that Andrea Jeremiah sent him the film's screenplay, saying she wanted to produce it through her banner The Show Must Go On, and asked him to read it and gave his opinion on it. Speaking about the screenplay, Vetri Maaran revealed, "The script had four or five really interesting, unexpected and unconventional film moments. That excited me." The filmmaker also disclosed that he asked SP Chokkalingam of Black Madras Films whether he would like to produce it with actor Andrea and that the latter also liked the idea. "I never wanted to get involved in this film in the capacity that I have involved myself with," the filmmaker shared.

Vetri Maaran also said that he approached Kavin for the lead role in the film and that Nelson Dilipkumar, who serves as a narrator for it, gave some creative inputs for it. "Nelson said, "We cannot show certain things, so we should soften a few things in Kavin's character. We had to give director Vikarnan Ashok certain insights for making a theatrical mainstream film," Vetri Maaran disclosed. He also revealed that he added the song 'Kannumuzhi,' originally meant for his film with Suriya, Vaadivaasal, to the Mask album after seeking permission from the film's producer Kalaipuli S Thanu. He also dedicated the Kavin starrer to the legendary actor MR Radha's soul.
