At the recent Kuberaa audio launch, Dhanush confirmed that the sequel to Vada Chennai, his 2018 film with director Vetrimaaran, will commence production next year, quelling any speculation about its cancellation. It is unclear when the film will go on floors since Dhanush has multiple projects at various stages of production. Besides Kuberaa, which is slated to hit theatres June 20, he is awaiting the release of films such as Idly Kadai and Tere Ishk Mein on October 01 and November 28, respectively. He also has D56, a film with Mari Selvaraj, an Ilaiyaraaja biopic with his Captain Miller director Arun Matheswaran, and an Abdul Kalam biopic with director Om Raut in Hindi in the pipeline.

Recently, Vetrimaaran revealed that production on Vada Chennai 2 after completing Vaadivaasal, starring Suriya. Vada Chennai follows a carrom board player (Dhanush) who gets pulled into the world of gangsters. The film also stars Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, Kishore, Daniel Balaji, Samuthirakani, and Pawan, among others.
