Maareesan, starring Fahadh Faasil and Vadivelu in lead roles, earned ₹3.51 crore in total India net collection during the opening weekend, as per a report on Sacnilk.com. The film made ₹0.75 crore on Friday and ₹1.37 crore on Saturday, following which it brought in ₹1.39 crore on Sunday. While the percentage increase on Saturday was drastic, with a staggering 82 percent, Sunday was underwhelming, as it only slightly increased by 1.46 percent.

Helmed by Sudheesh Shankar, Maareesan tells the story of a thief, played by Fahadh, and an Alzheimer's patient, played by Vadivelu, who embark on an absurd journey that changes their lives. The film's poignant story and the performances of the leading duo have worked towards the film's favour. Yet, the numbers collected by this film are modest when compared to other recent theatrical outings.

Maareesan hit theatres alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen's Thalaivan Thalaivii, which demonstrated greater commercial viability. In its opening weekend, the film made ₹20.77, with the Sunday collection alone amounting to ₹9.02. As a family drama, the film is attracting more audience than Maareesan, which is touted to be a thriller.

Vivek Prasanna, Sithara, PL Thenappan, Livingston, Renuka, Saravana Subbiah, Krishna, Haritha, and Telephone Raja round out the supporting cast of the film. Yuvan Shankar Raja has composed the music with lyrics by Madhan Karky and Sabarivasan Shanmugam. The film features cinematography by Kalaiselvan Sivaji, editing by Sreejith Sarang, and action choreography by Phoenix Prabu.

Produced by RB Choudary under the Super Good Films banner, Maareesan’s story, screenplay, and dialogues have been penned by creative producer V Krishna Moorthy. An excerpt from CE's review of the film reads, "What could have been a wholesome, thematically rich, and philosophically engaging road trip drama suddenly turns into a crime thriller loaded with simplistic social commentary."
