As Rajinikanth's classic commercial blockbuster Baashha clocks 30 years since its initial release, the film is getting re-released.
The film's director, Suresh Krissna, shared a note along with a picture of himself with Rajinikanth. He wrote that Baashha is what it is because of him. Praising Rajini, the filmmaker said that he did not play Baashha but became Baashha with his electrifying performance and towering screen presence. He said the film will forever be etched in cinema history.
The film was about an autodriver, Manickkam, who acts as the sole breadwinner for his siblings after their father's passing. But Manickkam hides a truth about himself from his siblings. A truth that threatens his integrity as an honest worker and family man. Manickkam is revealed to be Baashha, a crime boss, who does good for the community in Bombay. When he confronts Mark Antony (Raghuvaran), Manickkam's father, who works for Antony, is killed by Antony himself as revenge. In his dying moments, Manickkam's father extracts a promise from Manickkam: to live honestly and to support his family. But when Antony reappears in Manickkam's life, how Manickkam protects his family forms the rest of the story.
The re-release coincides with the film's 30th anniversary and the 60th anniversary of its production house, Sathya Movies, founded by RM Veerappan.
The action film is still cherished not only for Rajinikanth's charismatic presence but also for the strong characterisation of the antagonist, Mark Antony, played by Raghuvaran.
Baashha releases in the 4k format in theatres alongside another RM Veerappan-backed film, Idhayakkanni, which stars MG Ramachandran in the lead.
