Retta Thala has fared moderately on its opening day, with reference to its box office collections in India. The film, which is directed by Kris Thirukumaran, features Arun Vijay in a dual role.

According to Sacnilk, the film collected Rs 72 lakhs on the day of its release at the box office. Even with stiff competition from Sirai, the film fared well due to the crowd coming in to theatres, for Christmas.

Kris Thirukumaran was previously an associate of AR Murugadoss, and has previously directed Maan Karate and Gethu. The cast for Retta Thala also includes Siddhi Idnani, Tanya Ravichandran, Yogi Samy, Yogesh, John Vijay, Hareesh Peradi, and Balaji Murugadoss.

CE's review for the film reads, "There are specks of interesting writing like snow on asbestos. Every single character on screen is deeply flawed, corrupted by greed, and is almost irredeemable. When Kaali (Arun Vijay) sits down to talk with his look-alike Malpe Upendra (also Arun Vijay), we see the frame expand to reveal the painting ‘Dante and Virgil in Hell’, which depicts two damned souls intertwined in eternal combat, foreshadowing their fate. But for any of this to connect, we should care about the characters, which sadly never happens."
