Debutant director Suresh's Sirai, which brings actor Vikram Prabhu back together with his Taanakkaran (2022) writer-director Tamizh, released in theatres today, and the first reviews have been positive so far. One of the audience members to speak highly of the film is Ravichandran Ashwin, former Indian Cricket team and Chennai Super Kings member, who is also a film buff. Calling it a "gripping" film, Ashwin said that it is a big deal for a film to keep the audience hooked in today's day and age, without making them look at their phone during the screening. The cricketer also made a special note of the performances in the film, especially those by Vikram and LK Akshay Kumar. He said that every single cast member performed their role in a way that makes the audience feel for them. "It does not look like a hero's movie at all; it looks like everybody's movie. Refreshing for Tamil cinema," Ashwin said.
Sirai has a story by Taanakkaran fame Tamizh, which is based on the former police officer's real life with the addition of fictional elements. In a previous conversation with CE, Tamizh said about the film's plot, "It follows a police officer who takes an accused to court. En route, the officer gets to learn about the accused’s past and the latter escapes with a gun."
The film marks the acting debut of Akshay Kumar, who is the son of its producer Lalit Kumar of the bannerSS Screen Studios, known for backing the Vijay starrers Master and Leo.
The cast also includes I AM Kathalan star Anishma Anilkumar in her Tamil debut, Ananda Thambirajah, and Remya Suresh, among others. Its technical team includes music director Justin Prabhakaran, editor Philomin Raj, and cinematographer Madhesh Manickam.
