At the audio launch event of his upcoming directorial, Kombuseevi, director Ponram opened up about how he got the idea for the film. He shared, "While writing the song ‘Yennada Yennada’ from Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, I went and stood inside the Vaigai dam. There, I noticed a well fitted with a motor used to pump water for farming. Curious, I asked how agriculture was possible inside a dam. They explained that when the water was drained, their land would reappear, and that was when they cultivated crops. Once the dam filled up again, they had to abandon farming on that land. That moment became the starting point for Kombuseevi."

But it took more than just one moment for the filmmaker to be pushed to write a full-fledged feature screenplay. "During the Covid period, I was in Theni when the dam filled up due to heavy rainfall. I went with friends to the dam for a shower, and there I saw an old man standing under an umbrella. By then, the water had submerged both the land and the crops. The man’s face was deeply lined with worry. His expression seemed to tell a thousand stories and became the inspiration behind Kombuseevi."

Ponram is known for his collaborations with Sivakarthikeyan on films like Varuthapadadha Valibar Sangam (2013), Rajinimurugan (2016), and Seemaraja (2018).

Kombuseevi stars Shanmuga Pandian and Sarath Kumar in lead roles. The cast of the film also includes Tharnika, Anaira Gupta, George Maryan, and Sujith Shankar. The crew of the film includes composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, Balasubramaniem as the director of photography, Dinesh Ponraj as the editor, Saravana Abiram as the art director, and Phoenix Prabhu and Sakthi Saravanan as the stunt choreographers. Kombuseevi is backed by Mukesh T Chelliah under the Star Cinemas banner. It is currently gearing up for release on December 19.
