It's raining re-releases in Kollywood. This time, it is Vijay's 2011 romantic entertainer Kaavalan. The actor's re-releases of this year – Ghilli, Sachein, Kushi, and Friends – received a positive response. The film will once again be released in theatres on December 5.

Kaavalan was directed by late Malayalam filmmaker Siddique, who also helmed the recently re-released Vijay-Suriya starrer Friends. Official remake of the 2010 Malayalam film, Bodyguard, Kaavalan revolves around the short-tempered Boominathan (Vijay), who is sent as a 'bodyguard' to the now-reformed ruffian Chembanur Muthuramalingam (Rajkiran). Boominathan does recover from his anger issues, but he also discovers an alien emotion in the process: Love, in an unconventional way. The film stars Asin as the female lead, who has worked with Vijay in Sivakasi (2005) and Pokkiri (2007).

Kaavalan, initially released for Pongal in 2011, turned out to be a hit and enabled Vijay to dust himself off after a slew of flops.

The supporting cast of Kaavalan includes Mithra Kurian, Vadivelu and Roja. Apart from the endearing romantic portions, the film also had some fantastic humour sequences.

Several Vijay films are being re-released to take fans on a nostalgic trip as the actor-politician has decided to call it quits after H Vinoth's Jana Nayagan to pursue full-time politics under his political outfit Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He will make his electoral debut in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
