The production banner of Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj's Coolie, Sun Pictures is appealing to the Madras High Court for a U/A certificate for the film in place of the originally issued 'A' certificate, reveals sources close to the development. It is the first Rajinikanth starrer in over three decades to receive an 'A' certificate from the Censor Board. However, since the release of the film, a section of the audience has been questioning the reason for the said certificate. Senior lawyer and Sun Pictures representative J Ravindran is moving the court for an emergency hearing. A bench headed by Judge TV Tamilselvi is set to hear the case on August 20, Wednesday.

Coolie has moments of violence and bloodshed, but not everyone is convinced by the Censor Board's decision to issue an 'A' certificate for the film. The production banner's contention seems to stem from the fact that films with more violence, such as the KGF franchise, received U/A certificates from the Censor Board.

Meanwhile, Coolie is enjoying a successful run in theatres worldwide. Sun Pictures announced yesterday that the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial has grossed more than 400 crore at the global box office.

The film, which brought Rajinikanth and Lokesh as well as the former and Shruti Haasan together for the first time, hit theatres on August 14, Thursday. It tells the story of a gangster looking to take revenge for the murder of his close friend.
