Thuppakki director AR Murugadoss revealed in a recent interview that he talked to Vijay about a potential sequel to the 2012 film before the latter made his political entry. However, the filmmaker told Galatta Plus that the actor's foray into politics has meant that he could no longer do a sequel to the 2012 film. "Only Vijay sir can do it," Murugadoss said. The director's latest comments follows his recent comments to Valai Pechu where he said that Thuppakki ended with the potential for a sequel.
The 2012 film follows a solider (VijayS) who comes back home on vacation from the Indian Army only to enlist himself into a covert operation to nab a terrorist (Vidyut Jammwal). The film, also starring Kajal Aggarwal and Jayaram, reportedly grossed around 130 crore at the worldwide box office. Thuppakki is best known for its background music by Harris Jayaraj, cinematography by Santosh Sivan, as well as Vijay and Vidyut's performances in the lead roles.
Recently, Murugadoss revealed that his upcoming film with Sivakarthikeyan, titled Madharaasi, will have action similar to Thuppakki. In the same conversation with Galatta Plus, the filmmaker revealed that the scene in GOAT where Vijay's character gives Sivakarthikeyan's Siva a gun is a big deal for the sheer rarity of such a gesture from a major star. The director concurred with the popular interpretation of the scene, saying that the presence of the gun (thuppakki) and his Madharaasi star's character name (Siva) in the Venkat Prabhu directorial only means that it is a meta reference to Vijay's political entry after his retirement from acting.
Murugadoss is set to reunite with his Thuppakki star Vidyut with Madharaasi, which is set for a September 05 release in theatres. On the other hand, Vijay's final film, Jana Nayagan, with director H Vinoth is slated for a Pongal 2026 release in theatres.
