Rajinikanth is known for his witty and often insightful speeches that entertain the audience. However, the actor's remark about Soubin Shahir, his co-star in director Lokesh Kanagaraj's upcoming film Coolie, during one of his recent speeches has drawn criticism from the audience. At a recent event to promote Coolie, Rajinikanth made an honest confession when he said that he was not aware of Soubin's work. He disclosed that Lokesh's original choice for the role of Dayal was Fahadh Faasil, but the filmmaker had to think about another actor because of scheduling issues with Fahadh. The actor went on to add that he was not sure about the choice of Soubin for the film, despite the latter's prominent role in last year's blockbuster Manjummel Boys, because the actor is "bald". However, Rajinikanth did not oppose the director's choice because the latter believed in Soubin's ability and suitability for the role. The filmmaker recently appreciated the actor's energetic dance in the Coolie song titled 'Monica'.

Many viewers are giving Rajinikanth the benefit of doubt, arguing that the actor did not have any malicious intentions behind his comments. However, a section of the audience is also calling him out for what they consider a clear case of body shaming.

It is worth noting that Rajinikanth holds Soubin's performance in Coolie in high regard. "I was blown away by his performance. What an actor," Rajinikanth said at the same event, eliciting a gesture of gratitude from Soubin.

Coolie also stars Sathyaraj, Upendra, Nagarjuna, and Shruti Haasan, among others. The film is slated for an August 14 release in theatres worldwide.
