Actor Suriya, who was promoting his upcoming film Retro in Thiruvananthapuram, firmly stated that he is against endorsing smoking, even though he has portrayed characters who smoke in his films. Speaking at the event, which also saw Joju George and Jayaram in attendance, Suriya said, "I am only smoking for the film. Please don't smoke in your life. If you start, you can never quit it. You might think it is just one puff, but you can never stop it. I will definitely not endorse that and don't do that."

He called the people of Thiruvananthapuram his family and said, "I bow down to you for standing and watching this event for hours together. I don't have words in my vocabulary to say thanks for the abundance of love that you have showered on me. Kerala is always a God's own country where everyone respects all kinds of art."

He continuted, "This is a Karthik Subbaraj padam. I am happy to associate with Alphonse Puthren who has made the trailer cut for this film. Karthik Subbaraj has his own genre and style. I have been wanting to work with him for a long time. Everyone knows how we spent those four months shooting for the film like a family. This will be completely different from all the films I have done previously. I am sure you will all love this." He also praised his co-stars Joju George and Jayaram for their work in this film.

Suriya has currently been on a promotional spree for his romantic action film, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, and was also in Hyderabad a day ago to promote Retro where he was seen alongside Vijay Devarakonda. It is on this stage that he confirmed that he will collaborate with director Venky Atluri for his next film.

Produced by Suriya-Jyotika's 2D Entertainment and Karthik Subbaraj's Stone Bench Films, Retro also stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead along with Jayaram, Nasser, Prakash Raj, Sujith Shankar, Karunakaran, Tamizh, Prem Kumar, Ramachandran Durairaj, Sandeep Raj, Murugavel, and Remya Suresh, among others.

Retro went on floors last year, and shooting was wrapped up in October. The recently-released trailer establishes that Suriya's character is trying to put his life of crime behind him for the sake of his love for Pooja Hedge's character. The trailer is edited by noted filmmaker Alphonse Puthren and is put together in a way that complements the film's and Suriya's tempestuous character from the film.

With Santhosh Narayanan as the music composer, the technical crew of the film crew comprises cinematographer Shreyaas Krishna, editor Shafique Mohamed, art director Jackson, action choreographer Kecha Khamphakdee, and costume designer Praveen Raja. The film recently cleared censorship formalities with a U/A certificate and the total duration of the film has been revealed as 2 hrs 48 mins and 30 secs.
