After a successful first collaboration with Karnan, Dhanush and Mari Selvaraj were officially announced to join hands for the second time for a project back in 2023.

While both were busy with their respective works, the project is now getting shape with the film production company Vels Film International's involvement. The Karnan duo's second collaboration has been tentatively titled D56. It was earlier said that Dhanush's Wunderbar Films will produce the film.

The official announcement of Vels Film International backing the film was made with a poster that was captioned, "Roots begin a great war," suggestive of a historical story Mari had earlier hinted at.

With the film being his 56th, it is unclear when the project will kickstart, as Dhanush's 51st, Kuberaa, by Sekhar Kammula; his 52nd and fourth directorial, Idly Kadai; and his 53rd, Tere Ishk Mein, by Aanand L Rai, are in different stages of production. Mari Selvaraj, meanwhile, last made Vaazhai and is now working on his fifth film, Bison: Kaalamaadan, a sports drama film that stars Dhruv Vikram and Anupama Parameswaran in the lead.
