Director Selva Kumar: No other title justifies my story better

The director talks about his directorial debut, a feel-good family entertainer titled Family Padam

Given that action or rom-coms are seen as the best bet in terms of a film's commercial viability, Selva Kumar Thirumaran decided to go with a feel-good family entertainer titled Family Padam for his directorial debut. Selva had previously written the story for Raghava Lawrence's 2023 action thriller, Rudran.

On why he chose this genre to kick-start his directorial career, he says, "I think like a movie-goer. We are being bombarded with a number of action films and I think the audience would like to watch some light-hearted movies as well, and Family Padam will be one such film."

Elaborating on the reason behind the title, the director says, "The story is about three brothers with a common goal. There are no on-your-face villains or emphasis on one particular actor. Since the film is about a closely-knit family facing situational hurdles, I don't think any other title would do justice."

While Tamil Cinema is not new to feel-good films revolving around brotherly bonds, Selva Kumar explains how Family Padam stands apart from films of this genre. "My film unravels in an urban setting with three brothers having several years of gap between them. The emotional or humourous situations are pegged on their generational differences. I don't think many of the 'sibling films' explored this aspect."

Selva Kumar reveals that with the first schedule having been completed, the film still has more than 20 days left to shoot, with a week-long Madurai schedule.

Apart from Uday Karthik, Vivek Prasanna and debutant Parthiban, who play the leads, Family Padam also stars Sreeja, Santhosh, Mohana Sundaram, RJ Priyanka, and Janani in important roles.

Family Padam is backed by K Balaji of UK Creations and is co-produced by R Chinnappan and Nadish A. The technical crew comprises cinematographer Meiyendran, music director Anivee, and editor R Sudharshan.
