Tamil film producer Hem Nag passes away

The late producer and financier, had popularly backed Rajinikanth-starrers Kaali and Garjanai

Film producer, distributor, and financier Hem Nag, who made films under the banner Hemnag Films banner, died on Tuesday. However, the reasons for his death, have not yet been revealed yet.

The late producer and financier, had popularly backed films starring actor Rajinikanth, in the 1980s. Namely, he has produced Kaali (1980) and Garjanai (1981). Kaali, directed by IV Sasi, with script by Mahendran, starred Rajinikanth alongside Vijaykumar, Seema, Fatafat Jayalaxmi, among others. With music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, the Telugu version had Chiranjeevi play Vijayakumar's role.

Hem Nag and Rajinkanth subsequently went to collaborate for another film, Garjanai, in the following year. Directed by CV Rajendran, the film starred Rajinikanth alongside Madhavi, Geeta, Jayamalini among others. With music composed by Ilaiyaraaja, the film was also made simultaneously in Malayalam and Kannada as well.

Hem Nag also backed the iconic Tamil film Suyamvaram, which had a star ensemble cast and large technical crew. The film holds Guinness World Record for casting most stars in a film and quickest ever made feature film. It was shot within 24 hours.
