Kalidas Jayaram won the SIIMA Best Supporting Award for his lead role in Thangam, a segment in Netflix's Paava Kadhaigal. He played Thangam, a queer person, in the film, which was well-received by the audience. Actor-director Venkat Prabhu, in a social media post, congratulated Kalidas. However, he also said that Sampath, who played a queer person in Goa (2010), didn't get similar recognition.

He wrote, "Really wish the critics were open like this then!! Sampath from Goa deserved more accolades! But never got recognised for the role he played! Sad but true! All we got was 'cheeeeeee' from reviews and reviewers for the role he portrayed. Happy for you Kalidas."

The tweet quickly went viral on the micro-blogging site with people agreeing with the filmmaker.

Sampath played the role of Daniel Danny, who is in love with Jack (Aravind Akash). The lovers become estranged when Samikannu (Premgi) walks into their life. Though the story arc was only a sub-plot of Goa, it turned out to be one of the first Tamil films to deal with the romance of queer people.
