Master-director Lokesh Kanagaraj's 2019 Karthi-starrer Kaithi is all set to release in Japan on November 19.

The film's producer SR Prabhu of Dream Warrior Pictures confirmed the news to IANS and said that the development came to be after a Japanese distributor showed interest in presenting the film.

"We were approached by a distributor who liked the film and wanted to showcase it in Japan. This is the first time that we are releasing one of our films in Japan. If this works, a new market will open up," Prabhu said. However, this isn't a direct release and the producers have sold the rights of the area to the distributor. "It's a new idea. We want to see on how many screens the film releases in," the producer said.

Prabhu further added that the style of filmmaking might be one of the reasons why the distributor liked Kaithi. "The nature of the film is international. There are no song and dance sequences and it has a gripping story. That could have worked in its favour."

Kaithi featured Karthi and Narain in the lead roles. The film's massive success propelled Lokesh Kanagarj to stardom, who went on to make the hit Thalapathy Vijay - Vijay Sethupathi starrer Master. The director is currently directing Vikram, starring Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil.

Meanwhile, a Hindi remake of Kaithi is also in development, with Ajay Devgn set to step into the shows of Karthi
