ZEE5 has been a part of the streaming service space since February 2018, and over the years, it has grown its focus to regional languages and original content. Known for its diverse content slate, including original series and post-theatrical releases, the streamer has added some high-profile titles this year, including Suriya's Karuppu and Vijay's Jana Nayagan, to its own content slate. Now, how does ZEE5 decide which film to invest in and when?
In an exclusive conversation with CE, Lloyd Xavier, Business Head for Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam at ZEE5, talked about the streamer's approach and upcoming content slate.
With heavy competition for big Tamil star movies, does Zee 5 try to outbid competitors for massive blockbusters, or focus on mid-budget thrillers?
We don't view it as a choice between chasing big star-driven blockbusters or focusing solely on mid-budget films. Audiences engage with content for different reasons. While a major star-led film can generate immense excitement and cultural conversation, a well-crafted thriller or a compelling character-driven story can be equally impactful in building deep audience engagement.
Rather than evaluating content purely through the lens of scale or star power, we focus on the strength of the story and the value it brings to the Tamil ZEE5 ecosystem. This allows us to curate a balanced slate of marquee titles and distinctive, content-led narratives, giving audiences access to a diverse range of entertainment on the platform.
The consideration we make is, what does the film bring to audiences, what makes the story distinctive and whether it adds something meaningful to Tamil ZEE5 platform.
How do you fix prices for third-party produced films?
For us, the most important consideration is the relevance of the content and its alignment with the content proposition we are building on Tamil ZEE5. We evaluate opportunities based on the strength of the story, the creative vision, the talent involved, and the audience the film is likely to resonate with, while also assessing how it complements and strengthens our existing slate.
A film may have a highly specific appeal, an unconventional creative voice, or the ability to serve an underserved audience segment, and these are all important factors in our evaluation process. Ultimately, our decisions are guided by the potential we see in a story and how well it aligns with the viewing preferences and consumption patterns of Tamil ZEE5 audiences. While commercial considerations are naturally part of the conversation, we do not evaluate a film solely through the lens of pricing. Currently, our platform is home to a carefully curated blend of high-profile commercial entertainers and strong content-led narratives. What matters most is whether it can drive meaningful engagement and add distinctive value to the platform.
From a streaming perspective, do festival films drive meaningful subscriber count or does it help more with brand positioning for ZEE5?
The perfect example would be Balan: The Boy, which was showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, stood out for its distinctive storytelling and creative vision, while also being warmly welcomed by viewers as it offered themes and emotions that could resonate with a broader audience.
Festival films have value because they often bring unique perspectives to audiences that may otherwise have limited access to them. These films can have a specific, niche audience, but strong storytelling can make that connection deeply impactful. What matters is the point of view, the characters and the world the filmmaker has created, with stories that are breaking away from the norm and have something genuinely compelling to say. Streaming gives these films a wider opportunity to find the audiences who will appreciate them, while giving us the opportunity to make bold choices about the stories we bring to Tamil ZEE5.
Unlike Hindi, Tamil series have traditionally struggled with multi-season renewals. Do you have plans to build long-running, multi-season series IPs?
Tamil ZEE5 stands apart as the only OTT platform in the region actively investing in homegrown storytelling through multiple original series rooted in the culture, traditions, and realities of Tamil Nadu. We build originals that are authentic and deeply resonant, encouraging audiences to return and invest more time with our content. As we grow the slate, our priority remains to strengthen those relationships by bringing audiences more of the stories and characters they have come to love, while continuing to surprise them with fresh and compelling storytelling.

What are some of the upcoming series that Tamil ZEE5 subscribers can look forward to?
Building on the success of Tamil ZEE5's most popular originals, the platform is set to bring back fan-favourite franchises with Koose Munisamy Veerappan 2, Regai 2, Vilangu 2, Thadayam 2, and Sattamum 2. Expanding its original content portfolio, ZEE5 will also introduce a fresh slate featuring Ananthakaalam with Anand Neelakandan, Mix FM directed by Nelson, Octopus from Cinemum, and Thaai Mann, starring Muthukumar, Adithya Joshi, and Lisha. Further broadening the platform's entertainment offering is the reality series Thee Kural, reinforcing ZEE5's commitment to delivering diverse and compelling content for Tamil audiences.
There is a mix of familiar and new experiences, giving audiences across ages and interests the freedom to find something that feels right for them, while continuing to broaden what they can discover on Tamil ZEE5. The larger idea is to build a slate that caters to different interests and viewing moods.
How much does ZEE5 content performance dictate the content slate?
With the launch of the second season of our content slate, we are building on a strong foundation of audience insights. The performance of our content helps us understand what truly resonates, whether it's the stories that spark engagement, or the storytelling approaches that keep them coming back. These learnings allow us to make more informed creative decisions and identify opportunities to take successful stories and formats even further.
At the same time, we don't want our slate to simply replicate what has worked before. There is significant value in taking those learnings and applying them to new stories, creators, genres, and formats, while exercising our creative conviction. We want to remain closely attuned to audience preferences and viewing habits, while also giving ourselves the freedom to make bold choices and explore ideas that may not have an obvious precedent.
For ZEE5, performance is an important input into the decision-making process, but it does not define the boundaries of what we can create or bring to the platform. It helps us understand our audience better; the real creative opportunity lies in how we choose to apply those insights to shape what comes next.
