Actor-music composer GV Prakash Kumar, who was last seen in Adiyae, will be starring in his upcoming film Rebel, directed by debut filmmaker Nikesh RS. Apart from acting, the actor will also be composing music for Rebel.

Shedding light on the film, director Nikesh, in an exclusive conversation with CE, shares, "I was brought up in Kerala's Munnar. It is a period film which will showcase the life of people in the town. The film will centre around students who study there and how they are affected by the politics unfolding in the institution."

Nikesh explains that the story is based on a few real-life incidents that happened in the 1980s. Although the director refused to divulge the incident that sparked his idea, he says that GV Prakash would play a rebel who would rise in protest to fight for these students.

"Rebel would be a film for Tamil people. This is an important story that needs to be told and holds relevance for years to come," says Nikesh. The film, which falls under the genre of action-drama, also encompasses elements of romance, comedy and politics.

Prior to the release of the first look, the makers had paid tribute to real-life rebels including Bhagat Singh, Fidel Castro, Subash Chandra Bose and Che Guevara. "It is our way of paying homage to the leaders who have worked for the upliftment of the oppressed," he says.

Nikesh feels that GV Prakash, too is a rebel of sorts and it was the reason he chose the actor for his film. "He stands as the voice of Tamil people. Whenever an issue comes up, he would be among the first celebrities who would voice their opinion on social media," he says, adding that Rebel will be a special movie and milestone in the career of GV Prakash."

Mamitha Baiju of Mukundan Unni Associates fame, will make her Kollywood debut through Rebel. Both GV Prakash and Mamitha will play college students in the film. Karunaas, Subramania Siva, Shalu Rahim, Venkatesh V.P., Aaditya Bhaskar, Kalloori Vinoth and Aathira, among others are also part of the cast.

While the story of Rebel takes place in Munnar and Palakkad, the shooting happened in Munnar and Coimbatore. The post-production work of the film is currently ongoing and the makers are planning to release the film soon.
