Actor Issa Rae has joined the cast of the upcoming sequel of 2018’s Oscar-winning animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The Insecure star will voice Jessica Drew, better known as Spider-Woman. The sequel brings back voice actors Shameik Moore ( Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy/ Spider-Gwen)

The sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K Thompson, with a screenplay written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and David Callaham.

Lord and Miller will also produce the film, along with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg. The director of the original film, Peter Ramsey, is returning as an executive producer, alongside Aditya Sood.

Plot details are currently kept under wraps. In the comics, Jessica Drew hails from a fictional Eastern European country of Transia. Things go south when her parents discover uranium in Wundagore and use it in their scientific experiments. The radiation poisons Jessica, which leads to her parents injecting her with an arachnid blood serum in order to save her. Jessica even becomes a Hydra agent before taking on the mantle of Spider-Woman. It is yet to be seen if the sequel touches upon this origin story.

The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is scheduled to hit theatres on October 7, 2022.
