Netflix's psychological crime thriller Mindhunter, which has had a two-season run so far, might not be renewed for a third season. Hopes on the new season started withering when the show’s leads, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, were released from their contracts in January. Now the series' executive producer and showrunner David Fincher has revealed that the series might be done for good.

During an interview about his upcoming film Mank, with Vulture, the filmmaker said, "It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.'" He also added that he was uninspired during the start of season two and the writing had to be started all over to make the series interesting.

Fincher revealed that the opportunity to make Mank for Netflix was offered to him by the streamer's CEO Ted Sarandos and Cindy Holland, as they wanted him to work on something else apart from Mindhunter

“For the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive series. I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs,” Fincher said, explaining the mismatch between the viewership and budget.
