Netflix has announced a limited prequel series to The Witcher, titled The Witcher: Blood Origin. The six-part series will trace the origins of the Witchers, about 1,200 years ago in the world of elves. The cast details are yet to be announced.

Henry Cavill plays the titular role as the Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, which became Netflix's second most-watched series in 2019. The series is an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher novels and stories.

Declan de Barra, one of the writers of The Witcher season one will act as executive producer and showrunner of the upcoming series. In the statement announcing the series, de Barra said, "A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books – What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall."

The shooting for the second season of The Witcher is set to resume in the UK in August.

Earlier this year, Netflix also announced an animated spin-off film on the fantasy drama, The Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf.
