Earlier this week, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur had lashed out at director Ali Abbas Zafar for announcing a trilogy titled Mr. India without allegedly consulting or taking permission from the original makers.

Now, Sonam Kapoor, daughter of Mr. India star Anil Kapoor, has joined the chorus against the reboot. In a social media post, Sonam shared that her father didn’t know about the forthcoming Mr. India before the official announcement was made. She added that it’s disrespectful to not consult the original team, including her father and director Shekhar Kapur, before setting a new franchise.

Sonam wrote, “A lot of people have been asking me for the Mr India remake. Honestly, my father didn't even know that the film was being remade, we found out about it through social media when Ali Abbas Zafar tweeted. It's quite disrespectful and underhanded, if it is true, since no one bothered to ask my father or Shekhar uncle - two people who made a major role in making the film what it was and what it is.”

“....It's sad because it was a film made with heart and hard work and it is very sentimental to my father. Beyond commerce and announcements, it is a part of his legacy. I should hope that respect for someone's work and contribution is still as important to us as a big weekend at the box office,” she added.

Released in 1987, Mr. India was an iconic sci-fi superhero film starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. A popular classic, the film is ranked among Anil Kapoor’s best works.

While announcing the reboot, Ali had shared that he is still working on his script and would finalize his cast after finishing the first draft. The makers had also clarified that the film will not be a remake or sequel, but, ‘imagining of the iconic classic.

Zee Studios, the producers of the upcoming trilogy, is yet to issue a statement on the matter.
