It was reported last year that director Vetri Maaran will be teaming up for a film with Soori, which would be bankrolled by Elred Kumar under his home banner, RS Infotainment.

Initially, it was said that the film would be based on late lyricist Na Muthukumar’s poem Pattampoochi Virpavan and later, it was speculated that it would be an onscreen adaptation of Meeran Moideen's Ajnabi. But, a source close to the team has now revealed that the untitled project will be based on Jeyamohan's short story, Thunaivan, which was published in Ananda Vikatan back in 1992.

The source also stated that the film will go on floors in Sathyamangalam on December 8 and that veteran director Bharathiraja has been roped in for a pivotal role. Soori and Bharathiraja have previously worked together in films like Pandiya Naadu, Kennedy Club, and Namma Veetu Pillai. The makers are also planning to bring on board a leading composer.

Vetri Maaran is expected to complete this film before commencing work on Suriya's Vaadi Vaasal. Meanwhile, Soori will next be seen in Rajinikanth's Annaatthe
