Disney is rebooting the 2003 Haunted Mansion film and Kate Dippold, the screenwriter behind Ghostbusters (2016) and The Heat, has been roped in to pen the script.

The original film, which was based on the Disney Parks ride of the same name, starred Eddie Murphy. Disney had tried to reboot the film earlier with Guilermo Del Toro as co-writer and producer, but the project never took off.

The new reboot seems to indicate that Disney is planning to make new franchises based on their rides. The successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was one such product and so is their upcoming release, Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, which is slated to hit screens on July 30, 2021.

Based on Dippold's previous films, Haunted Mansion might feature a strong woman lead. Dan Lin and Jonathan Elirich’s production company, Rideback, which bankrolled the live-action adaptation of Aladdin, will also be a part of this film.
