Moothon, Run Kalyani win top honours at NYIFF 2020

Geetu Mohandas' Moothon and debutant Geetha J's Run Kalyani have won the top honours at this year's New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF). While Moothon took home the Best Film, Best Actor (Nivin Pauly) and Best child actor (Sanjana Dipu) trophies, Run Kalyani won Best Actress (Garggi Ananthan). Achal Mishra won Best director for Gamak Ghar, and Saurav Vishnu's Tailing Pond won Best Documentary.

Moothon, which also stars Roshan Mathew, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sujith Shankar and Dileesh Pothan, is about a boy's journey to find his elder brother. Anurag Kashyap co-produced it and also contributed the Hindi dialogues.

Run Kalyani is about a house cook who yearns to be free of her monotonous lifestyle and burgeoning debts.

Gamak Ghar revolves around an ancestral home over the course of two decades.

Due to the pandemic situation, the festival was organised online this time, from July 24 to August 2. However, the streaming date of these films has been extended to August 9. The list of features and non-features screened at the festival included entries from Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, and Marathi.
