Makers of Karthi's Sulthan slam protesters for attacking creative freedom; clarify film is not about Tipu Sultan

Karthi’s upcoming film with Remo-director Bakkiyaraj Kannan has been titled Sulthan. Dream Warrior Pictures, which is bankrolling the project, confirmed the same in an official statement. In the same statement, the makers also slammed groups that had disrupted the film's shooting in a temple, assuming that it was about Tipu Sultan.

In a strongly-worded statement, the production house also questioned the right these protestors have to curb the expression of filmmakers. “Of late, for their own publicity, individuals and some organisations have begun to attack movies. We have the censors to decide what a film must show and not show. Apart from this, it is entirely up to the filmmaker to choose what he wants to showcase. This is a right that our country gives us. We strongly condemn any organisation or individual attacking the freedom of creative artistes. Further, we very strongly condemn the act of painting historical figures with religious and casteist colours, insulting both their lives and our history,” the statement from Dream Warriors read.

Sulthan is being shot in Chennai, Dindigul, and surrounding regions. The film, which has Rashmika Mandanna playing the female lead, also features Yogi Babu and Mansoor Ali Khan in key roles.
