Director Suseenthiran made his debut in Tamil with the film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu back in 2009 starring Vishnu Vishal and Saranya Mohan in the lead. The film also introduced a slew of supporting stars like Soori, Appu Kutty among others. The film was well received by the audience and was highly appreciated for its realistic approach and emotions.

Director Selva Sekaran, an erstwhile assistant of Suseenthiran, has now come up with a sequel to the film titled Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu 2. A sports drama much like the original, the sequel will have a new protagonist played by Vikranth, along with Pasupathy in the role of his father. The film will trace the journey of Vikranth's character after he joins the team and his bond with his father. Kishore will reprise the character as the coach in the sequel as well.
