Avengers: Endgame has finally ended the decade-long reign of Avatar, becoming the world's highest-grossing film of all time. On Sunday, Avengers: Endgame crossed $2.7902 billion at the box office beating the $2.7897 billion-mark set by James Cameron's 2009 film.

The cast, elated with the news, took to social media to post their joyous reactions. Chris Hemsworth, who portrays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, said, "Thank you to all the fans around the world that lifted Avengers: Endgame to historic heights, making it the top grossing film of all time."

A post on the official Twitter handle of Russo Brothers, the directors of Avengers: Endgame read,"To the greatest fans in the universe, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you."

The official handle of Avatar tweeted,"Congratulations, Marvel Studios!" with an accompanying picture of Iron Man in the Avatar world captioned, "Oel Ngati Kameie, I see you Marvel. Congratulations to Avengers: Endgame on becoming the new box-office king. Signed, Jim Cameron."

Avengers: Endgame was the 22nd film of MCU and it bid goodbye to the founding Avengers Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk and Thor and upon opening last April, set the biggest global opening of all time, at $1.22 billion.

A re-release of Avengers: Endgame last June, with added footage, and the release of Spider-Man: Far from Home -- which closes out the Infinity Saga aka the Phase 3 of Marvel Cinematic Universe -- gave the film the final boost needed to overtake Avatar
