It looks like Julius Avery, whose horror film, Overlord, is scheduled for release on November 9, has already got an offer to helm another project. The director, who debuted with the Alicia Vikander-Ewan McGregor-starrer Son of a Gun in 2014, is all set to direct a Flash Gordon film.

The film will be an adaptation of the pulp comic strip which originated in 1934, with Flash fighting the tyrannical ruler of the planet Mongo, Ming the Merciless. First adapted for television through the Buster Crabbe serials, the comic got a big screen adaptation in 1980 with Sam J Jones playing the titular character, while Max von Sydow played the evil Ming. The film, which is famous for its soundtrack that was composed, performed and produced by Queen, has since gained a cult following thanks to being popularised in films like Scott Pilgrim vs the World (2010) and Ted (2012).

While Matthew Vaughn of Kingsman-fame was speculated to direct the Flash Gordon reboot, with the arrival of Julius Avery, he will instead produce the film alongside John Davis and Hearst.
