Producer Rockline Venkatesh had announced of making Gandugali Madakari Nayaka under his banner. To be helmed by Rajendra Singh Babu, the film's launch was fixed for January 2019. Following which, they were reports that Sudeep is planning to star in a film based on Madakari Nayaka.

The project was later confirmed by the actor himself who had stated that he has been working on the film based on Madakari Nayaka for over a year. He had also mentioned that apart from playing the lead, he will also be taking the directorial responsibilities. They have plans to title the film has Durgada Huli.

However, two films with different stars of the 18th century hero has only created a controversy. A statement by Prasannanandapuri Seer that only Sudeep can play the role of Madakari Nayaka since he is from that community has not gone down well with the film industry nor the audience. A protest took place on Wednesday condemning the statement of Prasannanandapuri Seer of Valmiki Trust.

Meanwhile Sudeep, who wanted to put an end to this topic, he took to Twitter, and shared a lengthy note:

"Rockline sir is doing what he wants and wishes to do. I’m planning to move ahead with what I wish and dream to do. Swamiji has put forward his opinion (and) matter should rest there. A continuous debate on this is unwanted. With due respect to everyone, their emotions and sentiments, let this matter dilute as it is heading nowhere. Caste hasn’t been a part of creative thoughts and it never will be," he said, adding, "Let both the films do justice to the legend’s life and I feel that should be the respect we should be showing towards this warrior than spending time on these debates."

He further tweeted:
