The sequel to Mammootty's superhit film Pokkiri Raja, titled Raja 2, will be released on March 21, 2019. Vysakh, who directed the first film, will return to helm the sequel. Pokkiri Raja was Vysakh's directorial debut. The film also marked the Malayalam debut of actor Shriya Saran.

It's not clear whether Prithviraj will return for the sequel. The actor played Mammootty's brother in the first film. Recently, screenwriter Udayakrishna revealed that the new film will revolve entirely around Mammootty's character. Raja 2 is produced by Vysakh and Udayakrishna under the banner of UK Studios.

Pokkiri Raja was a pure masala entertainer that became an unexpected hit. Vysakh's last film Pulimurugan was the biggest hit in Malayalam cinema. It was also the first Malayalam film to enter the 100-crore club.
