Veteran filmmaker Steven Spielberg will be setting foot in the DC universe through the cinematic adaptation of the World War II adventure comics, Blackhawk. Spielberg will be bankrolling the film through his production house Amblin Entertainment, along with Warner Bros, and he is also expected to direct it.

The director's recent science fiction film, Ready Player One, was also a joint venture of the same production houses.

Speaking about Spielberg's plunge into the DC universe, Warner Bros Chairman Toby Emmerich said in an official statement: "We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit (Ready Player One) and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing Blackhawk to audiences worldwide."

The wartime adventure series focusses on the titular character, Blackhawk, the leader of an elite group of pilots fighting in World War II. Along with his team, he fights incredible super-villains and war machines. Spielberg has earlier handled a similar theme in his film Saving Private Ryan. So, the announcement has got DC fans excited worldwide.

Talking about the new film, the director said, "It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre.  I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk."

The official announcement about the principal cast and crew of the film is yet to be made by the makers.
