The possibility of a spin-off featuring Obi-Wan Kenobi, a beloved character in the Star Wars saga has been discussed among fans of the franchise for some time now. Now, it seems their wait might be coming to an end as production on the spin-off will reportedly begin in early 2019.

Reports now state the film, with the working title Joshua Tree, is expected to roll into production at Pinewood Studios in the UK in January 2019. It is expected that the Kenobi spinoff could arrive in theatres right after JJ Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX comes out in December 2019.

Although there is no script yet, it is said discussions are being held with Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry to take charge of the project. If he does land the job, he will oversee active development and writing with Lucasfilm.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi character has so far been portrayed in live-action by Sir Alec Guinness in the original trilogy, followed by Ewan McGregor in the prequel trilogy films. It must be noted that McGregor, not long ago, expressed his desire to reprise the iconic role.
