Akira (R-rated) -Katsuhiro Otomo's masterpiece deserves the iconic status it enjoys today. Brimming with surreal visuals, music and out-of-the-box sci-fi ideas, this is the Blade Runner of animation.
Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse - Arguably the ultimate and best Spiderman film ever made. A delightful blend of spellbinding animation, brilliant storytelling, and witty dialogues.
Fantastic Mr Fox - Wes Anderson's foray into animation is a wonderfully realised adaptation of Roald Dahl's book of the same name, voiced by a stellar cast involving George Clooney and Meryl Streep.
Loving Vincent - Every frame is a painting, literally. The collective effort of a group of skilled artists, it gives us a peek at the troubled life of the now-celebrated painter Vincent Van Gogh.
Ghost in the Shell (R-rated) - Like Akira, Ghost in the Shell is another thought-provoking sci-fi animation film with a combination of beautifully detailed animation and dreamy music.
Rango After the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, Gore Verbinski tried his hand at an animated adventure powered by stunning visuals (courtesy of Roger Deakins) and entertaining characters.
Ratatouille - This light-hearted friendship tale of a chef and his cookery-obsessed rodent friend is the ideal antidote for a bad day. It is one of the finest from the Pixar banner.
The Lion King Probably the first animation film for many growing up. Despite being a showcase for superior photo-realistic CGI, the contemporary remake failed to recreate the magic of the original.
The Red Turtle -One of the most hypnotic, colourful, and meditative cinematic experiences ever made. A perfect example of purely visual storytelling, The Red Turtle is essential viewing for animation.
Waltz With Bashir (R-rated) - Based on Ari Folman's experiences in the Lebanon War of 1982, this one employs a part-documentary, part-fictional style and is replete with memories and hallucinations.
