Revisiting Andaz Apna Apna: 26 lesser-known facts about the comedy classic

Rajkumar Santoshi had directed the back-to-back hits Ghayal and Damini. For this third film, he wanted to explore a lighter subject.

Rajkumar envisioned the two warring friends as human versions of Tom and Jerry.

Salman Khan wanted a longer screen time but agreed to what was on offer.

The Mahurat shot was done by Dharmendra in 1990. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was also present.

Both Raveena Tandon and Karishma Kapoor were newcomers at the time of muhurat. The female leads switched their original names in the film.

Andaz Apna Apna took almost four years to complete.

A commercial failure upon release, the film went on to achieve cult status.

Tinu Anand was offered the role of the main villain Crime Master Gogo.

The part of Gogo finally went to Shakti Kapoor.

Gogo calls himself ‘Mogambo Ka Bhatija’ — a nephew of Amrish Puri in Mr. India (1987).

In a scene, Aamir Khan jokes that Salman Khan’s father has written Sholay (1975). This is true.

Sholay is referenced several times, like when Aamir Khan mimics Dharmendra asking Hema Malini her name.

Jagdeep’s Bankeylal Bhopali is a nod to his iconic Soorma Bhopali in Sholay.

The scene where Aamir Khan loses his memory and Salman brings carpentry tools is borrowed from the 1966 Tamil film Thenmazhai, starring Nagesh.

Paresh Rawal played a double role as Ram and Shyam (Teja) Bajaj.

In the film, Mehmood’s character owns Wah Wah Photo Studio. In Pyaar Kiye Jaa (1966), he played a brat who starts the banner ‘Wah Wah Productions’.

Plot elements from Andaz Apna Apna were used in the regional films Ullathai Allitha (1996), Veedevadandi Babu (1997) and Galate Aliyandru (2000).

The climax was borrowed from the 1972 heist comedy Victoria No. 203

S P Balasubramaniam voiced 3 tracks for the film, including ‘Ye Raat Aur Ye Doori’ with Asha Bhonsle

The man in the bus scene resembles Shashi Tharoor, leading to rumours that the politician had a cameo in the film

In the credits, Shakti Kapoor’s name is spelled with a ‘T’ instead of an ‘S’, since his character can’t say ‘S’.

So far, this is the only film to star Aamir Khan and Salman Khan together.

Andaz Apna Apna’s producer Vinay Sinha passed away earlier this year.

In 2019, Dabangg 3 writer Dilip Shukla confirmed he is writing a sequel for the comedy.
