About a decade ago, a Tamil film left me sleepless. It was an agony that Karthick and Jesse didn’t unite. They, after all, looked like they were made for each other. Now, to someone who believes that no one is made for anyone, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa still has a soft corner. Here are some of the moments that stuck with me even without rewatching the film for a long time.

Karthik meets Jesse: Love at the first sight is a cliche but Gautham Menon sells the idea and how! And what a moment for AR Rahman’s Hosanna!
I don’t want to be your brother, Jesse: Stalking is bad but stories like Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa make us wonder isn’t everything subjective?
Light Foot-nu kupuduvaaru: Heroism in Gautam Menon’s film sometimes can get a bit too self-indulgent with borderline narcissistic voice over. But if you have a Simbu to pull it of, go ahead, I say.
THIS IS LOVE: Gautam loves to experiment (Nadunisi Naigal is just experimental Gautam on steroids) and that’s why a normal romantic cafe scene becomes a fascinating visual treat here.
Mannipaya: Finally, Jesse’s guard comes off. She no longer pretends that she didn't call off the wedding because of Karthick.
Yaen Apdi Sonna? : The music, the look of Simbu… everything about this scene is sad like a withering flower. It also shows how complex Jesse is.
Jesse Poitae Irundha: Yes, this is just one blurry frame I froze but this also something that stuck with me all these years. A brilliant way to visualise someone’s departure from your life.
Ezhudha Poren: How should a man, who is not letting go of his past, respond to a proposal made by someone interested in him? Do it like Karthick: polite and mature.
