Bankrolled by AVM Productions, the movie was the remake of Dharmathmudu (1983) and had screenplay by Visu.

The film had had music by Isaignani Ilaiyaraja.

Nallavanukku Nallavan had an emotional climax initially, which the producer AVM Saravanan was not impressed with.

though the movie was initially censored with this climax, the team then shot an action packed climax and got it censored.

The movie released with the action climax and became a super successful outing at the box office.

Nallavanukku Nallavan won Superstar Rajnikanth a Filmfare Best Actor award for his performance.

However, Rajini wanted Murali to be given the award for his acting in Poovilangu and wrote a letter to the awards panel.
