Netflix announced on Thursday that Jay Ellis has boarded the cast of Kate Hudson's Running Point, the upcoming sports comedy series from Mindy Kaling. While Hudson will be seen as a Basketball Team president, Ellis is set to essay the role of Jay Brown, "a former player and now seasoned Head Coach of the LA Waves whose zen-like approach has led the team to multiple championships."

Running Point is described as, "a new comedy series from Mindy Kaling set in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports." Along with Hudson and Ellis, the series will also star Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Max Greenfield, and more.

The official logline of the 10-part series reads, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her sceptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”

Kaling is also the co-writer and executive producer of Running Point and will be working with frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen. Stassen is also the showrunner of the series.

President of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jeanie Buss, Lakers executive director, Limba Rambis and 3 Arts' Howard Klein will also executive produce Running Point along with Hudson. Warner Bros. Television, under which Kaling and her banner Kaling International are, will be producing the series, along with Jordan Rambis.

Ellis' claim to fame was his performance as Martin Lawrence Walker in the HBO series Insecure. Other popular credits of the actor include Escape Room and Top Gun: Maverick. The actor was last seen in Freaky Tales and is currently working on series such as Mrs. America and History of the World, Part II in which he plays recurring roles.
