Director Sudhi Maddison's time-loop film Dhoomakethu is set to release on OTT about a month after its theatrical release. Starring Sajin Gopu and Nikhila Vimal in the lead roles, the film that blends time-loop and comedy elements is set to drop on October 23 on Netflix. The streamer announced the Dhoomakethu OTT release date on Tuesday. It will be available also with dubs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
The story follows Kuttan (Sajin Gopu) who wakes up on the day of his marriage with a nightmare regarding his own demise. As the wedding day unfolds for Kuttan, a sense of deja vu starts to set in, making it difficult to tell apart reality and imagination for him. Realising that there is something wrong in his world, he embarks on a journey to discover the truth behind it all before his wedding day events repeat.
Also starring Ganapathi, Manju Pillai, and Shine Tom Chacko, among others, Dhoomakethu hit theatres on September 25, Friday. The film opened to mostly positive reviews from critics but has not done particularly well at the box office. According to data from the tracker Sacnilk, it has earned 1.65 crore from theatres. Sacnilk calls it 'a disaster' in its box office verdict. Now, the makers of the film are hoping that the positive response for it from theatres will continue after its digital premiere.
On the technical front, the film has composer Ankit Menon, cinematographer Jinto George, and editor Vivek Harshan. In our review, Vivek Santhosh wrote, "Dhoomakethu does not bring anything new to the time-loop genre; the plot follows the usual pattern of beginning with a shock, then coming to an understanding and making an effort to escape based on that understanding. But what keeps the film ticking is that it focuses more on the comedy of the situation than on constructing an intricate puzzle around it."
