With just days left for its theatrical release, Athiradi has completed its censor formalities. The campus-based action entertainer has been awarded a U certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification, confirming that the film is suitable for viewers of all ages.

Meanwhile, Athiradi has also found itself at the centre of an ongoing social media controversy ahead of release. In recent days, several posts claiming that the Suriya-starrer Karuppu lacks hype in Kerala and could open poorly at the box office went viral online. As similar posts surfaced across multiple cinema-related pages, sections of social media users alleged that Athiradi’s PR team was attempting to deliberately degrade the rival film ahead of their box office clash.

The controversy triggered mixed reactions online, with many criticising the alleged negative campaign and arguing that audiences would ultimately decide the fate of both films based on quality. At the same time, some users defended Athiradi, saying it was unlikely that the film’s team would engage in such tactics and suggesting that certain posts may have been created purely to provoke fan wars and online debate. Both films are slated to hit theatres worldwide on May 14.

Athiradi features Tovino Thomas, Basil Joseph and Vineeth Sreenivasan in the lead, with Riya Shibu, Zarin Shihab and Darshana Rajendran in pivotal roles. The film marks Basil’s first venture as a producer and is backed in association with Dr Ananthu Entertainments. It is the directorial debut of Arun Anirudhan, who had earlier co-written Minnal Murali and Padayottam.

Karuppu stars Trisha as the female lead, reuniting her with her Aaru co-star Suriya. The supporting cast includes Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi.
