What do they say? When it comes from the horse's mouth, we ought to believe it. Priyadarshan, who sort of made a career out of doing sequels and remakes, recently made a candid admission about such movies.
Speaking to Variety, the legendary filmmaker said that he dislikes the idea of doing second parts to his own films, as he knows the kind of effort it took to do the originals and because he has anxiety about whether these films would work in theatres. "Finally, when it works, I don’t want to take a bigger burden the next time to make it work again," the filmmaker added.
However, Priyadarshan also noted that it is a better idea if a second part continues from the events of the first one, citing James Cameron's Terminator franchise as a good example of the same.
"If you are taking films like Terminator 1, Terminator 2, you can see a continuity. But in the other case only the title matches, nothing else matches," he said.
The filmmaker also added that when a film only has a title that gives the audience the impression that it is a direct continuation of a previous movie, while it is not, this would only bring in initial box-office collections. Referring to such projects, he said, "They are utilising the fame of the previous film to pull the audience into the theatre. Then what happens is the audiences are coming in for three or four days because of the aura of the first part, and the films are able to clock some collections. But after that, the films are dropping. By that time the producer feels that I have made my money. So it’s a kind of exploitation."
Interestingly, Priyadarshan's upcoming films also include Hera Pheri 3.
