A sexual assault case has been registered against Chidambaram, director of the Malayalam blockbuster Manjummel Boys. The case was filed by the Ernakulam South Police following a complaint by a young woman. According to police sources, the complaint relates to an incident allegedly taking place in 2022 at the woman’s flat in Elamkulam.
The complainant has alleged that Chidambaram trespassed into the apartment and behaved in a sexually inappropriate manner with intent. Based on her statement, the police have booked the director under Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and sexual harassment. Police officials stated that a detailed investigation is underway. Chidambaram is expected to be questioned, and further steps, including possible arrest, will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
Chidambaram made his directorial debut with Jan.E.Man in 2021, which earned critical attention. He later rose to national prominence with Manjummel Boys, a survival drama based on real life that went on to become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films and a major success beyond Kerala. He is currently working on his third feature, titled Balan.
The latest development comes days after the director publicly dismissed rumours linking him to a proposed project with actor Dileep. Chidambaram had termed those reports ‘fake’ and urged social media pages to "please verify before you post trash." Dileep was acquitted a few months ago in the long-running 2017 actor abduction and assault case.
It is also worth noting that in 2024, following the success of Manjummel Boys, an actor and social media influencer who had appeared in Jan.E.Man made vague allegations on social media suggesting that Chidambaram had misbehaved with her. No formal complaint had been reported at the time. Further details in the present case are awaited as the investigation progresses.
