The makers of Digger, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, dropped a full trailer for the film on Monday. Shortly afterwards, standup comedian cum actor Vir Das said that he auditioned for a role in the film not once but twice before it went to Riz Ahmed. "Gave two auditions for this. They went with Riz Ahmed. Was severely crestfallen, but that's life. This script is insanity, in such a good way," Vir Das wrote in a post that now stands hidden. The standup comic cum actor is yet to explain why he has kept the post hidden.

Meanwhile, netizens have started to speculate about whether Fahadh Faasil also auditioned for the same role. Many months ago, we reported that Fahadh was in line to play a role in the film from director Inarritu and that he even had a video conversation with the filmmaker about it. Ultimately, the actor could not land it because it required him to master a particular accent by living in the US and because the makers of the film were not willing to pay for it.

Digger revolves around Cruise's character who is called "the most powerful man in the world." The protagonist sets off on a mission to make people around the world believe that he is their saviour following a global disaster stemming from his deeds. Tom Cruise is virtually unrecognisable in his role for Digger, with his transformation drawing comparisons between the character and his role in Tropic Thunder.

Digger also stars John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, and Michael Stuhlbarg. Rounding out the cast are Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy.

The film is directed by Inarritu from a script he has written alongside Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone, as well as Sabina Berman, based on a story by the filmmaker himself and Berman. Digger is slated for a September 30 release internationally.
