Late on Monday, actors Revathy and Padma priya announced their resignations from Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). The actors released a joint statement addressing the reasons for their exit.
They started by addressing that their resignation was not 'in haste', or about a 'single incident'. They said that requests for certain asks like safer workplaces and equal treatment were met with silence and distance. They also mentioned that while the Hema Committee Report led to resignations, the 'old order' returned.
The actors also mentioned, "AMMA was meant to stand as a collective voice for all actors. But it has become increasingly shaped by patriarchy and power politics, weakening its founding ideals. Walking away for us now is not defeat. It is self-respect." They also mentioned that they will continue their work in cinema.
Revathy and Padmapriya's resignation from the AMMA comes after the exit of former president Shwetha Menon after a general body meeting of the organisation.
After Shwetha Menon's victory in the organisation's elections, Revathy offered support to the former when she faced comments based on her career.
